Can Amlodipine Tablet Cause Loss Of Teeth?

My doctor added amlodipine 10 mg a day about four months ago and I am having problems with my teeth. I have lost 2 teeth already. I take really good care of my teeth and have a lot of money invested in them and I don't want to lose anymore. Should I change medication?

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain Amlodipine is a CALCIUM CHANNEL BLOCKER and is used to control high blood pressure.

It is seen in many cases that it leads to dental problems like overgrowth and inflammation of gums.
In case if you have some already happening dental problem like deposits on teeth and gum infection there are chances of a more severe problem.

The enlargement of gums caused by amlodipine is known as DRUG INDUCED GINGIVAL ENLARGEMENT and it can lead to difficulty in maintaining proper hygiene, speech and eating and the inflammation can lead to damage to the underlying jaw bone leading to tooth loosening and finally tooth loss.

If you have already lost 2 teeth i would suggest you to consult your physician and explain him the symptoms so that he can change your medicine.

You should visit a dentist and get professional cleaning of teeth done to make them bacteria free as well as if your gums are swollen it will reduce the swelling to some extent.

At times excessively swollen gingiva needs surgical excision.

Use of antimicrobial mouthwash can help keeping bacterial growth minimal.

A course of antibiotics can be taken.

But before all withdrawal of drug and replacement with other drugs is needed.

Hope your query is solved..
