Burping, indigestion, bloating. Taking tums to relieve symptoms. Treatment?

I m a 23 year olf female and spent literally my entire life from what I can remember NOT being able to burp. Here recently however, I would say in the past 6 months I have started burping. It s also coupled by indigestion and bloating . I have been resorting to taking three Tums to relieve the indigestion and bloat, but nothing helps the burping. I was wondering what could make me, after years of not burping, start?!

Hello, slfisher89,
Burping or belching is an act of expelling gas that is trapped in
the stomach. Everytime we eat or drink or swallow saliva we
also swallow air. Most the gas travels down the intestine and
eventually comes out the anal canal. There is a sphincter
muscle called LES(Lower esophageal sphincter) at the junction
of esophagus and the stomach.
If the sphincter pressure is weak, stomach contents can escape
easier and hence burping. Smoking makes LES weaker.
Tums has calcium as ingredient.Eventhough you may get some
relief, there is acid rebound because calcium stimulates more
acid.Eating too fast or drinking too fast will make the probleworse.
Hope, now you are aware of the situation.
Wish you good health.
