Burning Sensation On Urinating, Bleeding, Lower Abdominal Pain, Spotting. Causes For Symptoms?

Well, two days ago I noticed that when I urinate I get a burning sensation, a really bad sensation at that while the pee is traveling down the tract. And some hours ago I went to the bathroom and after urinating I saw a drop of blood on the toilet paper. Also, I experience pain in the lower part of my abdomen (around the bladder area) while urinating and I urinate often but small amounts come out. I had sex a week ago and I m scared it may be spotting :(. I haven t experienced any signs of pregnancy besides that one drop of blood. At first I thought my period came early (it supposed to be here next week). So what s wrong??!!

Hi there,

Thanks for writing in.

Most probably you might be having a urinary tract infection/cystitis as evident by burning micturition, lower abdominal pain, drop of blood etc. Any history of fever/ increased frequency of urination?

I would advise you to get a urine routine and microscopy done to look for findings of urinary tract infection.

In the meantime , drink plenty of water ,at least 10-12 glasses of water a day to flush out the bacteria or toxins if any.

A glass of cranberry juice daily might also help.

Abstain from sexual intercourse till you get better.

Maintain good perineal hygiene. Keep the perineal region clean and dry.

Ensure regular periodic emptying of the bladder.

Ensure double voiding. Pass urine normally, 15 - 20 min later pass urine once again before going to bed. This is called double micturition.

We can't rule out pregnancy for sure, as you had intercourse 2 weeks before the date of periods. It is quite possible that ovulation could be happening around that time . However, wait and watch.

Once you get better, empty the urinary bladder before and after sexual intercourse.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan
