Burn Victim. Burned Down To Abdominal Wall, Edema And Swollen From Toes To Top Chest. What Could Be The Cause For Edema?

33 yr old female burn victim with over 65 0/0 of her body burned. 5 months post op. she burned down to her abdominal wall. she is now in nursing home awaiting more surgeries. 5 days ago edema set in. she is severely swollen from toes to top of chest. tested for congestive heart failure and results came back fine. tested for kidney failure and results came back fine. her BP levels are fine and no fever. she does have some pain in abdomen where skin grafts cover her entire right front torso from lower breast to below the waist line. The skin graft which is normally indented about 3 inches ( down to abdominal wall) is now level with the left side of her body. The skin graft cannot stretch much further. She has been on Lasix and her potassium level was slightly low and was given more potassium. What would cause her to have this edema now. It only occurred once while in the ICU burn unit after surgery and a blood transfusion. Do you have any idea what might be going on?

Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Oedema is very commonly seen in extensive burns especially involving the abdomen. It may be early onset or late onset . It's usually post inflammatory burning Oedema because of loss of capillary permeability in blood vessels and also due to neovascularization. Low protein that is hypoalbuminemia may be a contributing factor.

I hope it helped

Take care
