Bump Between Upper And Lower Jaw, Painful, Have Cold. What Could This Be?

Small bump between upper and lower jaw, pain on touching, cold. Causes and treatment?Hello. Well, I have been having pain in the area where my upper and lower jaw meet. I believe it is called the retromolar trigone. I can see a small bump that feels soft and hurts when touched. It is also really painful to open or close my mouth or to chew. I have had a cold for the past four days but this bump is just very painful and difficult to manage. Do you have any idea what it might be or how to go about fixing it?

Dear friend.

Thanks for sharing your concern.

The painful bump could be due to an abscess or due to the impacted third molar.

In that case you need to see your dentist and get yourself examined.

You might have to start a course of antibiotics and analgesics to curb the developed infection.

Also a dental x ray can detect the extent and location of third molar. Therefore you can decide to get it extracted upon consultation.

An abscess could be the result of deep dental decay too,in that case along with medication root canal treatment is advised.

Hope it helps.

Thanks.

Take care.

Hi,

Thanks for asking the query,

According to your clinical history i suspect that you have developed the above symptoms due to the erruption of the wisdom tooth.
A thorough clinical examination by the Oral Surgeon is necessary.
Also take an OPG radiograph.
Take a course of antibiotics and analgesics.
At home take lukewarm saline and antiseptic mouthwash rinses.

Hope this helps out.

Regards...

hi..
thanks for the query...
well... it seems to be due to erupting third molar...
food accumulation between the gum and tooth often causes inflammation...

you should visit your dentist and should get an IOPA done... request him to irrigate and clean the area between your tooth and gum... he will also make the inflamed area out of occlusion by grinding the opposing tooth if required... antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs are required too... do warm saline rinses 6-7 times a day...

another thing is to check the space for your tooth to erupt.. if space seems to be available on the radiograph, then go for a small procedure called operculectomy... in which inflamed tissue over the tooth is removed...
if space is not available, then please go for its extraction...
hope it will help you...
take care...

Hello,

From the symptoms that you have mentioned,I think your wisdom tooth is on the way of eruption...and if your upper wisdom tooth is erupted already,it may hurt the lower soft tissue covering your lower wisdom tooth....

That has resulted inflammation and subsequent abscess formation..which you feel as a bump....

Keep that area clean after every meal...and take warm saline rinses...

Visit Dentist and proper x-ray or OPG is required..and on the basis of that your treatment will be decided...

Don't chew any hard ,hot ,spicy food with that side.....

Get well soon...

Take care....
