Brownish Black Stains On Molars, Excessive Staining Tendency, No Cavities. Treatment, Preventive Measures?

I have a question for a dentist . I have brownish black stains on my molars and it seems that all my teeth stain quite easily. I have excellent oral hygiene (brush, floss, fluoride mouth wash every day) but i seem to be very susceptible to staining. The dental hygienest and dentist tell me I have no cavities and my teeth are in great shape but tell me I have excessive staining, and then remove the stains during the cleaning. How can I remove these stains myself ad be proactive to keep them away in the future? Thanks!

Hello there.
Its great to see you are taking great care of your oral hygiene. Your cleaning regime appears perfect from the information you provide. Here are some things to consider.

1- Whilst you say that you brush your teeth, how often do you brush? How long do you brush for? What technique are you using to brush? What kind of toothbrush are you using?
You should be brushing twice a day minimum, using circular motions and not back and forth scrubbing motions for at least 2 minutes each time. You should then spit out the toothpaste but dont rinse.

2- What mouthwash are you using? Some of the best mouthwash products contain Chlorhexidine Gluconate. This is fantastic to preventing plaque accumulation and protecting against gum disease. But it promotes the uptake of staining and makes your teeth go yellow or brown. This is a superficial "extrinsic" stain and can be easily removed. To prevent this, either change your mouth wash or avoid eating and drinking for 8 hours after use of mouth wash (i.e. over night).

3- What food are you eating? Curry, tea, wine, etc are all food stuffs that can increase staining regardless of how good your brushing is.

4- Do you smoke? Smoking is a leading cause of staining, not to mention decay (due to xerostomia - dry mouth) and periodontal disease (gum disease). Consider quitting if you do smoke.

Hope that helps. Good luck and keep up the good work with your oral hygiene.

hi
brownish black stains are generally due to smoking or eating of tobacco. do you use any of them. if yes , you have to quit them to get rid of these stains. if you are not using them , then it can be due to some kind of food item you are using. in any case do proper brushing twice a day. use mouthwash and do proper flossing as you are already doing but with proper technique. it will help a lot. you can use this home remedy - mix baking soda in water and use it on teeth, but not too much. it will help you with stains. for proper cleaning, you have to go to your dentist.

wishing you health
with best regards

See, staining in an individual is very common but as u said u r very much prone to staining, there can be 2 reasons:
1. Your dietary habits:
Foods and beverages that can stain your teeth include soy sauce, berries, black tea, coffee, red wines, curries, colas and red fruit juices. Acidic foods and beverages or extreme changes of hot and cold can cause teeth pores to expand, which also may allow stains to penetrate. Avoiding or limiting how often these foods are consumed is one way of protecting against staining.

2. Improper Maintainance of Teeth:
The good news is that maintaining a clean, plaque-free smile is possible. Keep a few tips in mind to maintain clean teeth. First, remember to rinse away stains by brushing your teeth. Also ur brushing technique should be in circular motion to be more efficient. If you are unable to brush your teeth after consuming food or beverages that may stain your teeth, preserve clean teeth by rinsing your mouth with water or a dental rinse. Next, eat right. Eating a balanced diet including the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables will help promote clean teeth.

Finally, if you have not already done so, quit smoking. Smoking is one of the top factors that undermine clean teeth.
And of course, visit your dentist regularly to ensure that you are on the right path in your oral health plan.
