Hello there ,

Thanks for writing your query,

Brownish discoloration of the gums is caused may be due to gingival inflammation or gingival abscess or periodontal ascess.

It is caused due poor oral hygiene ,improper brushing and flossing that leads to accumulation of bacterial plaque and calculus deep in the gum pockets and root surfaces of the teeth.

Gingivitis presents with symptoms of redness , bleeding gums , swelling , pain ,recession and sensitivity.

It needs to be treated by thorough professional deep scaling of gums and root planing of the teeth to remove all the irritants ,this will help in resolving the symptoms followed by a course of antibiotic and analgesics.

i would suggest you to go for symptomatic treatment at home like gargling with lukewarm saline water or antiseptic mouthwash like chlorhexidine or betadine.

you can apply topical oral antiseptics like dentogel over the affected which helps in giving soothing effect to the gums.

i hope this helps ,

take care.

Thanks for asking the query,

Brownish discolouration on the gums are due to;
- Gingivitis-inflammation of the gums as a result of some injury reaulting from eating of any hard
substances or drinking some hot food or drink.
- Reddish brown can also indicate some old haemorrhage.
- Chronic cheek biting.
- Formation of periodontal infections, periodontitis.
- Oral cancers are chronic conditions associated with the use of tobacco.Discolouration in your
Mothers case is not suggestive of cancer as you dont have such symptoms.

I would suggest you to visit to an Dentist and get the checkup done, to rule out any other pathology.
Take an OPG x-ray if needed.

You should eating of hot, spicy and irritating foods.
Maintain a good oral hygiene.

Hope this helps out.

Hello dear
Information provided by you seems to be incomplete. It is actully the plaque arount teeth that is creating this stingy feeling.the colour ( brown) of gums can be natural. So check the front teeth of your mom properly and you will find bulk of plaqe around.Actully she need a dental hygienest for her cleaning of teeth. In the mean while tell her to do warm saline rinses , apply oOTC available gum paints. They will help her.

The main culprit behind this is the black pigment known as Melanin. In certain diseases like Addison’s disease, peutz jeghers syndrome, there is an increase in melanin pigmentation. Poor oral hygiene, smoking, medications, metallic filling.

The exact treatment for discolored gums will vary depending on the root cause.
I would suggest you to-
get scaling and root planning done, bone grafting and splinting has to be done in case of bone loss, maintain good oral hygiene. The abscess has to be drained and curetted, Meanwhile, avoid intake of hot/spicy/cold foods, Brush your teeth using soft-bristled toothbrush.
