Brown discharge, no blood, pains in lower abdominal

Hello, I am 22 almost 23. I was suppose to start my period and instead I had a brown discharge w a little to no blood . it only lasted about 3 days stopped then started again 2 days later w no blood at all. I am also having a lot of pains in my lower abdominal as well as pains on both of my sides underneath both ribs. I have never had this happen w the brown discharge other then the end of my menstral cycle.

Firstly, you should exclude/confirm pregnancy through a blood or urine test if you are sexually active. Secondly, it could be due to some hormonal disturbance that has occurred due to some stress, infection, use of certain medications or sudden weight changes. You may also need a trans-vaginal sonogram for a proper clarification in addition to blood counts, urinalysis and a physical exam by a specialist. Management is based on the presence/absence of pregnancy, hormonal imbalances and other causative factors. Hope this helps.
