Broken Tibia, Fever, Pain. How Long To Recover?

Hello Dr. Siegel, I broke my tibia 5 days ago the pain is a 7-8 when I get up after laying with it elevated, it throbs probably from the blood rushing to the area. I also am experiencing a low fever at times 100-100.1 is due to the pain and break. How many weeks should pass before it starts feeling better and not hurting as much. Thank You. Warmest Regards, Ethan Siegel

Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

A fractured tibia needs an immobilization either in a cast or brace till it unites. Generally a fractured tibia takes around 12-16 weeks to unite.

Your pain will wane off slowly within 1-2 weeks of immobilization.

It is common to have a low grade fever after a fracture owing to the release of inflammatory substances into the circulation as a result of fracture.

Keep your limb in elevation most of the times and perform active toe movements.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
