Breastfed Child Is Vomiting, Not Gaining Weight. Advice?

Hi
im Sumit from calicut , India , my baby is 56 days old and has gained weight of 4 kilo as on date .We are breast feeding her at her demand when she cries for milk. The problem what we feel now is she is puking every day either in day or in night. And we have a feeling that she is not gaining weight or her growth is not normal. More over once we visited a local doctor , he asked if she smiles at you which she normally doesn't .. she sleeps well , plays well and drinks milk .. but her puking is worrying .. pls advise

Hi Sumit,

Thanks for writing to health care magic.
I can understand your concern.

A baby normally gains around 30 gms per day in the first few months. So in the last 2 months your baby should have gained around 2 kg.

Babies normally bring out small quantity of milk after breast feeding. This occurs more commonly if the baby is not properly burped. So burp your baby after each breast feeding. If still baby continues to vomit and brings out good quantity of milk then you should suspect GERD.

If baby is gaining weight normally despite bringing out small quantity of milk then nothing needs to be done.
Continue to ask further queries as required.
Hope this helps.
Take care.

Welcome to HealthCare Magic

Hope you are doing good. Usually babies don't gain weight if they have persistent vomiting , loose motion and low oral intake of milk.
If your baby vomit after you feed him then it means he is having problem with digesting the milk. After feeding him milk don't lay him on bed put him on should for awhile try to rub has back until you feel he has digested the milk. The sign of undigested milk is that he will vomit the same milk again. If he has some other problem he will vomit the milk mixed with green color bile then you should contact your pediatrician.

I hope have answered your query , feel free to ask if you have any query. wish your baby good health. Regards
