Boil on armpit was cut open, drained and packed. Given sulfamethoxazole-tmp ds. Should the boil still be drained?

i have a boil in my armpit that was cut open & drained & packed yesterday morning. I was given sulfamethoxazole-tmp ds to take for 7 days. My question is should the boil still be draining? The packing isn t holding it all its draining puss outside the packing... Is that a sign the medicine is working or do i need to go back?
