Bitten By Stray, Administered One Dose Of Rabies Vaccine. What Precautions Should Be Observed?
My bro-in law (51) has been bitten by a stray dog.eeb taken to agovt.hospital and adminisitred rabies vaccine today 03.11.2012. and the dr. has him to visit on 07/11,10/11, & on 01.12.2012. We are South Indian (Tamil) veggies. What are the food restrctions? should the dog be observed ?. Does the patient get fever after the VACCINATION? DOES THE SAME REQUIRE SEPARATE TREATMENT
Hello,
Once Rabipur has been given within 24 hrs you are in safe hands, but washing the wound thoroughly is highly recommended. If there is evidence of a skin cellulitis, then intralesional vaccine and antibiotics like flucloxacillin / tetanus toxoid is recommended. The attending doctor should take this decision.
Please ensure he has the rest of the 3 booster doses. No food restrictions are required.
You can watch the dog and if infected will succumb to the illness in 15 days.
Remember bites of other animals such as foxes, bats, monkeys are equally harmful and post-exposure prophylaxis with anti-rabies vaccine is recommended.
Fever after vaccination can be treated with calpol or paracetamol 500/650mg only. Aspirin should NOT be given.
Thanks.
