Binocular Double Vision. Brain And MRI Scans Normal. Eye Examinations Normal. Family History Of Glaucoma. Advice?

Hi...I have suddenly developed binocular double vision for the last one month especially towards the left gaze...I am near sighted and had been working on a computer doing detailed graphics work for the last one year. Brain mri plus blood work advised by my neurologist has come out ok..The situation is worst in dim light and without my glasses but improves considerably about 90 percent improvement with glasses. Eye examinations have so far come out normal..also have a family history of glucoma...Pls advise as i am worried what can cause this? Could it be that my eye muscles have become weak due to high and detailed computer work for a long period?

Ophthalmologist 's  Response
Hi..
Thanks for choosing HCM.
Is the double vision only binocular or monocular also( if so, which eye?)?
Are your both eye balls moving normally in all directions or is there any restriction of movement?
Are you a diabetic?
If answer to any of the above questions is yes, you need to undergo a thorough ophthalmic examination.
If no, you could be having a shadowing of object which is a symptom of astigmatism, which can be corrected by cylindrical lenses.
Working with computers for a long time causes fatigue of ocular muscles but not double vision unless there is a change in the refractive error. It can cause some dryness also. Try to take some breaks in between ( 5-10 min once in hour) so as to avoid fatigue.
Glaucoma will not cause double vision per se. But because you have a family history, better to go for glaucoma evaluation also.
Take care..I will be available for further queries.

Radiologist Dr. Rajesh Pahwa's  Response
hi,
binocular double vision is mainly because of following reasons
neurological which in your case has been ruled out by brain scans
any element of acute onset squint (may be subtle)which has to be evaluated by ophthalmologist and preferably a strabismologist.do not forget to get your blood sugar and blood pressure repeated
uncorrected refrective error
and fatigued muscles and accomodative power of eye
dryness of eyes

so
increase your protein intake
sleep a bit more
take a half minute break every half hour to close your eyes so that tearfilm circulation is smoothened
a repeat ophthal evaluation is recomended with a computerised perimetry to rule out any early glaucoma
taking antioxidants and putting ocular lubricant would also benefit

good luck

General & Family Physician Dr. Veera Raghava Rao Buddha.'s  Response
Hi, it appears that you have a primary night blind ness, that is why you have clear vision in light, cause might be the defeciency of vitamin A probably due to non absorption of the vitaminA or not taking the substances containing A. I advise you to consult a physician for diagnosis and treatment.
Thank you.
