Bad Cough, Blocked Ears. No Help From Antibiotics. Prescribed Gupisone Tablets. Side Effects?

Hi, i would like to ask you. I am having a bad cough for more than 10 days. I took antibiotics, but didnt help me very much. Cough still remains and now I have blocked ears as well. Now my doctor prescribe me another type of antibiotics with Gupisone tablets 20mg. I have to take 2 Gupisone tablets 20mg once a day for 3 days. I read about many side effect of these tablets (like gain of weight or hair growth..) and also that they have to be tapered of gradually. I am a bit scared to take these tablets. Can you please tell me your opinion? Thank you very much.

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Acute onset of cough is most commonly related to a viral illness and is not improved by the use of antibiotics.
Antibiotics treat bacterial infections , cough and cold is usually not bacterial but viral.

The coughing is a result of the viral infection causing nasal secretions that may irritate the airways and also inflammation or slight closure of the air passages.

You can consider the use of cough suppressant medication that is usually combined with an antihistamine and decongestant (to help with the nasal secretions).
In addition to use of a mucolytic , if the cough is wet and productive, would also help to break up the mucus in the chest so it can be cleared. Mucolytics are sometimes combined with medications to help reopen the airways.
These medications are available over the counter. You can speak to your local pharmacist to see what is available in your area.

The cough related to a viral illness can sometimes last up to 6 weeks.

I hope this helps
