Atrial Fibrillation. Rapid Heart Beat. Treatment?

What is the normal course of treatment for atrial fibrulation ( think that is what it is called) It is where the heart rate speeds up considerably for no apparant reason. My 86 year old father has had this a couple of times (was hospitalised once to monitor it) once where his heart rate was up to 154 beats per minute. I would like to know what the usual treatment is for this condition??

Hi, thanks for using healthcare magic

Treatment of atrial fibrillation involves controlling the heart rate, heart rhythm and preventing blood clots. The use of medication depends on many factors such as the degree of symptoms, the presence of other illness, the likelihood of cardioversion ( going to a normal heart rate and rhythm).

Your father will likely be on medication controlling the heart rate such as beta blockers, calcium channel blockers which are normally used first line.
He may also be on medication to reduce the chances of a heart attack or stroke.

It would also be important to control any other risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes ,high cholesterol.

I hope this helps
