Are Vomiting Spells Due To Diabetes?

Dr. SamueI, is it possible to have recurring vomiting spells due to living in a small bedsit with no kitchen but a cooker which causes high levels of dirt and moisture to deposit everywhere, in a place which I have to say, has very poor hygene levels. My friend who this concerns, blames his problem on diabetes.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. I am not Dr. Samuel, but I can take a stab at your question anyway. A lot of things can cause recurrent vomiting spells, especially in the conditions you have described. They can definitely be due to poorly controlled diabetes (from gastroparesis, or a build-up of acid in your body called Diabetic Ketoacidosis).

Does your friend check their blood sugar and take their diabetes medications regularly? Vomiting can also be due to infection, since it sounds like your friend does not live in a clean environment (does he have a fever?). Lastly, vomiting can also be due to carbon monoxide poisoning if your friend is cooking a lot indoors and does not have good ventilation (is he also getting headaches?). My recommendations would be to focus on improving his diabetes, maintaining as clean an environment as possible, and making sure he has all his doors and windows open while he cooks (or cooks outside).

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Logan Pierce
