Are Steroids Prescribed For Acute Bronchitis?

My daughter was prescribed a steroid pack for acute bronchitis in addition to an antibiotic. She has no other health conditions and is 18 years old. Is this steroid necessary? I can't find evidence anywhere that it is typically prescribed for acute bronchitis.

Yes inhalation steroids are commonly prescribed for acute bronchitis such as Budesonide, Fluticasone etc.

There are a number of misconceptions about inhaled corticosteroids. Some people believe that have same side effects as orally taken steroids. The dose of steroid inhaler is in micrograms, which is one millionth of a gram, whereas in a tablet is taken in mg dose. Also the steroid is given in lungs only as compared to whole body as in case of oral steroids.

So if she is taking inhaled steroids and start to feel better, do not stop taking them. You must take them regularly and for as long as your doctor advises.
