Hi,I am Dr. Alexander H. Sheppe (Psychiatrist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
For the past year I have had skipped heartbeats that I feel in my stomach. They are like spams and hurt a lot. I have had many tests from a cardiologist and a gastsoenterologist and everything has been normal, the structure of my heart is good. The cardiologist said that skipped (really premature) beats are never serious but to me this is not normal and they scare me a lot as I get them so often, sometimes every 10 to 20 seconds in a row. If I lay down or sit they go away. No one seems to know what is going on and I am getting desperate to find out and stop them it is ruining my life as I am afraid to go out for fear they will start up. I am sure stress has somehting to do with this. I am a female 66 years old, weigh 137 lbs. and am 5'8" tall. Please can you give me an idea of what is going on and where do I go from here. Thank you, JoAnn
Premature beats are common and once your cardiologist has reassured you, you need not do anything about them. However, there is an additional problem that needs more attention: your anxiety and response to the premature beats. You should seek psychiatrist who will decide whether to prescribe medicines for anxiety. It is important that your get treatment for your anxiety. Do not restrict your activities. Do not stop going out and carrying out your daily routine. At your age, this is even more important. I hope this answer is helpful.
