Are Nausea And Dizziness Normal After A Mild Head Injury?

Hi, last thursday night i bumped my head slightly on door casing, since ten i have felt nausious and majorly light headed/dizzy. I went to the local walk in centre last saturday and they said just rest which is what I have been doing, is it normal for symptoms to last this long? I have been getting slurred speach as well but all of this comes and goes throughout the day, could it be none related to the bump and be a viral infection of some sort?

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that you have almost recovered from head injury. Sometimes head injury can cause concussion which may give rise to headache, vertigo, dizziness, nausea, memory deficit for few days. Usually it resolves on its own. Repeated incidents of concussion is not considered good.

In your case, concussion might be the cause behind occurrence of all these symptoms. You can also observe for other signs of head injury
: decreasing consciousness
: bleed through nose/ear/throat
: onset of new focal deficit
: persistent non relieving headache
If you have any of above signs, consult ER as soon as possible. The doctor might advise CT scan head to rule out fracture or bleed. Further management will be decided after report.

If no above sign, you can follow few tips at home
: Take bed rest
: avoid mental and physical strain
: apply icepacks at injury site
: You can take painkiller like Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription.
Hope it will help you. If still no relief, consult doctor.

Viral infection can be ruled out if no fever, body ache, malaise. You can check fever at home. If it is present, consult physician. You can take Paracetamol after prescription, take 2.5 to 3 litre fluids, bed rest.It will subside in 7-10 days.

Thanks. Take care

Hi, thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. Headache, poor concentration may persist for few days after head injury. Regarding slurred speech, if it persistent then it must be evaluated as early as possible. Otherwise temporary slurring could be
: Mouth ulcer
: Tongue infection
: drug overdose
: Infection of oral cavity, throat etc.

You should consult general physician as you are having temporary slurring. He will evaluate you and examine your tongue/oral cavity/throat and treat accordingly. Stop self-medicating. Take rest.

Now coming to rest complaints of headache, dizziness, if you are getting relief after taking medicine and symptoms are decreasing, you can wait at home. You will completely fine in 10-14 days. At home, you can
: Avoid exertion
: Avoid stress
: Take painkiller like Diclofenac sodium with antacid like Pantoprazole after proper prescription.
: For dizziness, you can take beta-histine after prescription

If your symptoms increase in intensity or no relief even after taking painkiller, vomiting, loss of consciousness, severe headache, seizures, consult ER as soon as possible. The doctor will advise CT head to rule out bleed or fracture. Further treatment will be given after confirmation.

Hope it will help you. Thanks, take care.
