Are Irregular Periods A Symptom Of Pre-menopause?

My wife has started experiencing irregular periods, both in the timing of the periods and in the intensity. She is 42 yo and has given birth to two children who are now 7 and 11 yo. Can this change be contributed to pre-menopause? She started ovulating at an early age. What sort of tests does she need to undertake to prove that it is pre-menopause? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
Menopause is not an illness and doesn't need any tests unless it is bothersome (like frequent and heavy bleeding leaving her weak or ill).
Or she faces other symptoms due to declining hormone levels such as joint ot bone pains, itching genitals, loss of Libido, hot flushes etc.

However, the age at which a woman attains menopause differs & depends on genetic factors.

Yes irregular periods, as in duration and blood flow could Indicate approaching menopause.

-hormone tests on day 3of her period (estradiol, FSH, LH, anti mullerian hormone)
- an ultrasound of her pelvis on day 3 of cycle to check for ovarian reserve
-Complete blood count to check for anemia if her bleeding is too heavy.
-an OBGYN consult

If she is fine and Comfortable, no need for anything.
She will need calcium supplements and will need to be as close to her ideal body weight (depends on current weight and height) to prevent osteoporosis.

Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
Wish you both good health
