Are Hunger Aches In Stomach Be Due To Intake Of Steroids?

Im getting gnawing hunger aches in my stomach which I think are being caused by steroids. Im on a low dose for a month to see if it has any effect on back pain. I don t want to take it anymore- can i just stop or do i need to lower the dose slowly. I started to take slippery elm today to see if it would calm stomach down.

I'm not sure what dose steroids you are on, but steroids are known to cause stomach ulcers. Oftentime when I prescribe steroids, I include an antacid medication (such as Omeprazole) to try to protect the stomach lining. I would recommend speaking with your doctor about this. In the meantime, I am not sure what slippery elm will do, but a medication such as Maalox may help your pain.

However, I would also recommend NOT stopping your steroids on your own before speakig with your doctor. Steroids are prescribed for specific indications, and abruptly stopping them can sometimes lead to withdrawal effects including dangerous drops in your blood pressure.
