Are Elevated Levels Of Liver Enzymes A Concern?

I have an sgot of 84, and an sgat of 187. I'm terrified. I am an alcoholic and have just stopped 24hrs ago. I'm 41yrs old, exercise regularly when not drinking, and eat somewhat healthy except for sticks of pepperoni and too much bread and soda pop. Am I dying?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI,

Following are causes of elevated liver enzymes: viral hepatitis, metabolic diseases, toxic effects of certain substances such as alcohol or drugs. But I think in your case it is due to alcohol drinking. It damage liver and cause increase in liver enzyme. These increase liver enzymes should be correlated with other liver profile tests like (GGT, billirubin, total protein) and symptoms.

I would suggest to repeat test after 8-10 days but do not take alcohol in thee days. Avoid: excessive alcohol, smoking, fatty/oily food. Take healthy diet high in carbohydrate and moderate in protein with lots of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables. Do not worry, but you should take care of your health.

Hope this may help you. Contact further if follow up needed.

Best regards,
Dr. Sagar
