Are Sinarest And Mucolite The Right Medications For Cold And Congestion?

Hi Docs,

My 1.6 yrs old daughter had running nose and slight congestion from past 10 days. We were only using vicks at night. Her condition hasn't improved and from past 3 -4 days she has started coughing. Even her nose running is greenish in colour and not watery like earlier. Should we put her on medication? Our doc prescribed Sinarest AF and Mucolite 3 ml 3 times each daily.

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your daughter have symptoms of cold and congestion which is due to upper respiratory tract infection and it could be due to blockage of sinuses leading to sinusitis.

I would suggest you to

- Take proper rest.

- You should start with antibiotic such as augmentin along with decongestants.

- Take anti inflammatory such as Levocetirizine .

- For now do warm saline gargles. Take steam inhalation.

- Keep yourself hydrated. Maintain hygiene.

- Take diet rich in multivitamins.

I would suggest you to consult pediatrician for proper examination as infection has already spread. Sinarest and Mucolite can be given to child is a safe combination to use, except it will make child drowsy. You should get throat swab test, complete blood profile to find out extent of infection.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

As per your complain it seems that your daughter suffering from upper respiratory tract infection, also known as Common Cold and the symptoms of runny nose, nasal congestion and cough are all due to cold..
As it is a viral infection it will not once the virus will complete its cycle in human body..

I would suggest you to give her steam inhalations and use a humidifier in her room..
Give her saline nasal irrigations as it will help in relieving congestion..
Give her plenty of warm fluids..
