Anemic. Taking Niacin, Chromium Picolineate, Levothyroxine. History Of Brain Bleeding, Mild Coronary. Will The Medicines Causes Anemia?

I am anemic and the hematologist says to come back in 90 days to see if I am bad enough to be given medication. This did not sit well with me. I am 91 years old and my medications are: Niacin 500 sustained action TID, Avodart, Flomax, Ferrous gluconate , Coq10, Chromium Picolineate, levothyroxin 88 mcg . I have had a minor brain bleed 15 years ago, bladder CA five years ago, and a mild coronary 2 years ago. Unfortinately the cardiologists all want to cure my PVCs that I have had since college days, and the beta blockers were additive to the Tamsulosin and caused a prattfal resultingin a crushed T-8. My concern is the possibility that one of my medications, or the combination, could be causing my anemia which is normocytic with a MCH in noemal range.

Hello,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.

I understand your concern.
Research shows that Chromium Picolinate containing supplements can cause anaemia.
Hypothyroidism may cause normocytic anemia.
If your Levothyroxine level is below to requirement, then Hypothyroidism may be cause for that anaemia..
so it may be a cause for your anemia.

At this age, Not only drugs. But nutritional deficiencies, Hormone depletion, iron protein carrier depletion can also cause Anaemia.

Hope this helps.
Taked care.

Dr.Manjeth
