88 year old having burning sensation in the foot after spraining ankle. What should be done?

My mother (88) sprained her ankle a week ago today. She has been keeping it elevated, we did ice and have it wrapped with an ace bandage . She has also kept off it as much as possible and has an appointment to see her regular doctor on Wednesday. However, she has been complaining the last couple of days of a burning sensation in the foot and ankle area.

Hello. As far as the burning sensation is concerned in the foot and ankle area, this can be due to the local inflammation present in that area which must be slow in subsiding considering her age too. What you need to look out for is any pain, any changes in the color of the fingers of the foot and that the skin on the affected foot is warm to touch. If any of such changes occur you should call for a prompt checkup. You did not mention about giving her any analgesic/anti-inflammatory medication, however any of such would prove beneficial. Regards.
