80 Years Old, Fainting Episodes, Pacemaker To Be Installed. Surgery Required?

Dear Dr. Grief, Thanks for being there. My wonderful Mother in Law XXXX has chosen not to have a Pacemaker installed as the surgeon did not give her a chance to answer the questions she had prepared, and even though she has fainted a few times, she is a very healthy 80 year old otherwise, and we are would like her to live many more years, she is so good hearted to all, and especially that we are worried for her husband to whom she has been married over 60 years, and her Grandchildren, we all love her so much, what can we do to encourage her to give another surgeon a chance?

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for writing in.
I am a qualified and certified cardiologist. I read your mail with diligence
It appears indication of putting a pacemaker was definitely there in view of fainting spells. But due to lack of rapport between the cardiac surgeons (in some states of the US it is cardiologists who put the pacemaker) the patient declined. Best course would be to prepare the lady by explaining the whole procedure in advance and then allow her to make her list of questions which can be supplemented spontaneously and re schedule the interview between the doctor who is putting the pacemaker and the patient. I am sure with a little tact on the part of doctor this will be a success.

With Best Wishes
