8 Year Old With Fever, Nasal Discharge And Fever. Taking Advil. Have Persisting Nose Bleed. Is It Normal? Ear Infection?

My 8 year old son has had a nigh fever (as high as 104) for the last 2 nights, coughing a lot, drippy nose , the fever has been manageable with kids advil bringing it down to 99.9 - 101. Today he had a nosebleed that tool 30 minutes to stop. How long is the fever going to last? Are the nosebleeds bad or acceptable for this situation? He went to the DR yesterday and they said he had a flu bug with right ear infection and prescribed amoxicilen.

Hi
Thanks for your query.
Your child is having fever with cold and cough which is mostly viral in nature.and takes few days to settle.
Nose bleeding for 30 minutes needs to be evaluated by ENT specialist.
For fever give acetaminophen if fever is more than 100F,apply cold compress over nose if he bleeds again.pinch nose for 5 minutes.
Give plenty of fluids.and simple bland diet.

Wishing your child good health.
God bless.

Hi

Please continue with the medications advised by your Doctor.

In kids with runny nose - due to frequent and rough wiping of the nose, small ulcers can happen inside the nose. Since nasal mucosa is supplied with lot of blood capillaries- even tiny ulcers can bleed for sometime.
It may recur again if wiped roughly.

Such nose bleeds are common in winter season especially when dry air blowers are used.

Be sure that room air is not dry. While wiping his nose, be gentle.
You may use nasal decongestant sprays- after getting it prescribed by your Doctor.
You may use it SOS when its too much of a runny nose.
Do not make him blow the nose- as it will end up in middle ear too.

Fever might take 4 to 5 days. Cough and cold might take 1 to 2 weeks to get okay.

You may get Medications like Benadryl prescribed by your doctor for cough and cold.
Give him plenty of fluids.

Hope my answer helps you.
Wish your son a speedy recovery.

Hi,
Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic,
It is common to get nose bleeding when the child is having cold associated with upper respiratory tract infection.
And it is due to bleeding from the weaker parts of nose like Littles area.
And it is aggravated by nose pricking in children due to irritation and by forceful sneezing.
But the frequent nose bleeding, persistent one side bleeding should be evaluated.
Whenever he bleeds compress that side of nose for 1 to 3 minutes to stop the bleeding and one side only pressed at a time.
Continue the medication as advised by your Pediatrician and consult again if the fever is not subsiding and repeated episodes of nasal bleeding.
Hope I have answered your query.
