73 Years. Blood Test Shows Elevated Blood Sugar. On Medication For High BP And Cholesterol. Habit Of Drinking Aerated Drinks. Possible Diabetes?

My mom is 73 years old. About a month ago, she went to the doctor for her regular six month check-up, and received the results of her blood tests. Her doctor informed her that her blood sugar was elevated, and that she should change her diet. My mom has never had high blood sugar before, but did drink about 2-3 Pepsi's per day for the past 45 years. She switched to diet Pepsi, and has cut back to 1 soda per day. Today, when we were at the store, she all of a sudden turned extremely pale, got dizzy and weak, and said she felt like she was going to pass out. She is on medication for high blood pressure and one for cholesterol, which is hereditary in her family. The doctor had said that she should come back in 3-6 months in order to have more blood work done, but I am concerned that perhaps this is turning into diabetes. I am seeking advice as to what I shoul direct my mother to do. Thank you.

Hello,
You have to first get your mother tested for blood sugar levels ( both fasting and PP ) done to know the exact status. If she is found to be diabetic, then appropriate anti diabetic drugs have to be started.Along with medications, proper dietary control also has to be exercised which involves quitting of sweets and sugary drinks like colas.
She must also try to do some exercises like walking daily for 30 minutes.
Along with diabetes, she must control her blood pressure and serum lipids meticulously.
At the moment, she requires a visit to ER to rule out any stroke, for which possibility is quite high.
Thanks
