5 Week Old Baby Very Irritable After Bottle Fed, Bring Up Constantly. Does She Have Reflux ?

I have a 5 week old baby and she is bottle fed, since day one she has been very irritable after a bottle, and brings up milk constantly during the day, it also takes her around 2 hrs to settle to sleep as she will be dropping off to sleep and suddenly starts wriggling and crying and then usually gets sick. She also HATES sleeping on her back and i have tried tilting her which has helped slightly but she is still not comfortable and still is very irritable and crys a good bit when put down. DO you think she could have reflux?

Hi,
I think your guess could be right .She could be having Gastroesophageal reflux .What you could try doing to reduce her irritatbility is :
1)give her small frequent feeds
2)feed and put her to sleep in semi reclined position i.e 30-45degrees
3)Try prokinetics (ask pediatrician for this)
4)if this continues may be early weaning with a few spoons of thick feeds like porridge after every milk feed at around 4-5mths.

Bye

Pediatrician Dr. E Venkata Ramana's  Response
Hi,
Thank you for your query,
Your child seems to have esophageal reflux.
But I advise you to give breast feeding exclusively till the age of 6 months.
Reflux is common in newborns and most will get relief from it by 6 months age.
I advise you to do the following:
.Burp after each feed.
.Hold your baby in upright position for 10 to 15 minutes after each feeding.
.Give small feeds for more frequently.
.Lateral position while in lying position but with supervision.
If still reflux is not getting decreased, consult your Pediatrician for further advise.
Hope I have answered your query.
