3 Year Old Kid, Having Cough, Cold And Running Nose. Should I Give Him Taxim To Prevent Congestion?

My child is 3 .4 years old and weighs 38 pounds. We stay in the US. Due to sudden cold weather, he has cough and cold. Since the past two days, he had a running nose. As generally advised here, I have been giving him a steam shower and using humidifier throughout the day. I also used nasal drop. However, now it seems that the mucus is getting thicker and is not constantly coming out from nose. He does not have a chest congestion yet. I am giving him Robitussin twice a day and nasal drop. Should I start antibiotics like Taxim O in order to prevent congestion? Please suggest.

Hi,

The symptoms you describe go for a rhino-sinusitis. It looks like a viral infection.

But, if the congestion is increasing and the mucus is getting thicker it is the possibility that a bacterial infection is superposed.

So, my advice is to give him antibiotic as : Augmentin (consult the doctor for the dosage), not Taxim since it is a very strong antibiotic and is reserved for more serious situations.
