12 Year Old, Lower Back Pain. Normal Test Results. Pulled Muscle? Growth Spurt? Suggestions?

my son is 12 years old and is having severe lower back pain on the right side. We had sonogram done on his kidneys and bladder....it came out normal.......then he had an x-ray of the lower back and it was normal. He was on muscle relaxant....5mg flexoril....its been at least 3 weeks of this ongoing pain....we thought it was better but this morning the pain was severe and he could not bend to wash himself. What could this be....a pulled muscle?? A growth spurt?? he is in a martial arts black belt program and had to stop. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Pediatrician 's  Response
It does appear, dear user, that this pain is related either to the muscles/tendons or to the spinal joints. The most important thing to do here would be to take him to an orthopedic surgeon and seek advice for the same. Flexoril can be continued as before. However, the recurrence of the symptom points to something unusual and hence a professional consultation is a must. No growth spurt will cause so much pain and for so long.
