Posted on Mon, 22 Feb 2016
Question: recent dx lyme disease, PICC line inserted, IV antibiotics x 4,
each night, subnormal temperature 96.7 and severe chills.
no sweating, severe swelling right knee

the anti biotic is Ceftriaxone.

Knee was aspirated a two weeks ago.
No infection noted.

Aspirated again last week. Negative now
for Lyme PCR but white count 8,ooo

No elevated temps. Only subnormal temps
with chills in the middle of the night 3x. No sweats.

Knee is not warm to the touch. Pitting edema on calf from socks worn.

No diarrhea. Another aspiration scheduled for later today.

Wonder if the antibiotic is the wrong one.
thanks for your kindness

Brief Answer:
Need to rule out Septic arthritis knee

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

Does your knee feel very warm to touch?

Can you mention the antibiotics that your are currently on?

Do you have loose stools ?

You could be having septic arthritis or sepsis.

You need to get your knee aspirated to look for pus and if required, arthrotomy or drainage of pus needs to be done.

Antibiotic therapy directed specifically against the infecting organism is very much needed at this point.

Excessive broad spectrum antibiotics can also cause antibiotic associated diarrhea and related infections such can cause the fever.

Kindly answer my queries for a better understanding and to rule out emergencies like Septic arthritis which may need an urgent intervention.

Thanks and regards.

Brief Answer:
Need a blood culture

Detailed Answer:
You could get a blood culture done to rule out sepsis. Also an antibiotic sensitivity testing can be done to find out if Ceftriaxone is the right antibiotic or if you need another one.
