Would B12 Shots Be A More Efficient Way In Treating Pernicious Anaemia?

Question: Hello Dr. Grief,
I feel that my perypheral neurapathy is the result of the loss of the factor in the stomach which helps in the bodies utilization of B12. I have started to take two-2000 mg. tablets of B12 daily as much of it is destroyed
in the stomach acid before getting into the small intestine where at least some of can be used by the body.
Would B12 shots(injections) be a more efficient way of getting the amount of B12 we need? XXXXXXX

Brief answer....you should take injectable VIT B12
Detailed  answer....
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
This condition is called as pernicious anaemia where there is a lack of intrinsic factor in stomach. This intrinsic factor is responsible for absorption of VIT B 12.
Treatment for this should be done by injectable form of VIT B 12 because intrinsic factor mediated absorption is lost and hence oral supplementation absorption is reduced to just 1-5 % of the total oral dose and which is due to local perfusion only.So in effect your body is absorbing only a minuscule percentage of oral dose being taken by you.
I would advise you to take injection rather than oral VIT B12.
I hope it helps, however you may revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
