Will Vitamin And Mineral Supplement Intake Affect The Kidneys?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Oct 2015
Question: I would like to find out if taking vitamins and minerals on a daily basis as well as medication affect kidneys.

I take a daiky dose of Vitamin C 2,000mg, vitamin D3 and a Calcium and Magnesium supplement. Usually at night. I live in a dusty environment (Zambia) and every change of season there is a lot of flue and colds that go round so I take the high dose Vit C to avoid this. I also sometimes take an effervecence Barocca.

Yesterday i hurt myself at work, fell through a raised platform and lasersted my lower leg and required 4 x stitches. Had pethidine for pain, local anestethic for my leg where they stiched me up, tetanus shot and was given course of antibiotics. Cefaxime

On top of that i have a cold and havd been taking some daily nasal relief cold meds.

Now Im feeling a slight soreness behind my lower back - I'm active in the gym and drive a lot, sometimes my lower left side hurts due to driving and seating position.

I also use a bodybuilding supplements for working out- pre workout ( caffeine, creatine, Nitric Oxide booster ), among other ingredients, also boost with a ZMA testosterone supplement, and I'm on a high protein diet.

Hence i would like to know if its time to cut out something that may be causing more harm than good to my kidneys, or if I'm overloading my body with too much.

If I am, what would you recommend I do ? What can i use to help detox my kidneys and keep them healthy and me healthy.

I keep saying kidneys because I have read that rear back pain is associated with Kidneys and looking at my lifestyle this is what i am assuming.

Your professional oppinion is saught.

Or if the pain in my lower back could be because of the fall / strain ?

I'm 33. Male. 1.78m, 96Kg. BP 110/70 usually. HR 54 bpm resting. Exercise 4-5 times a week. Drink a lot of water - no sugar and not much salt in diet.

I hope the information is sufficient.

Thank you.

XXXX.

Brief Answer:
Taking so much Vitamin C you are killing your kidneys.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

First of all some explanation for you. Back pain is a sign of kidney infection (not every pain of course). Taking some medicine you may destroy your kidneys indeed. But this destruction has nothing to do with an infection.
So in simple words, back pain can not be a sign of kidney bad condition and/or failure. When you destroy kidneys, it must takes years before you will notice it. And believe me, there will be no pain even with fatal kidney failure unless the infection wont be the reason of such failure.

Now if its about medicines you take here are my thoughts.
1. Vitamin C. Kidneys are very sensitive to this vitamin. The daily dosage is no more than a 100mgs. And this amount is the maximal dosage your body is able to take. When you take more, the rest is eliminated with urine. So in your case you waste 1900 mgs of vitamin C with urine. Such huge amount of vitamin C can greatly destroy your kidneys. And it does not make you infections resistant more that someone who takes 100 mgs.
2.Calcium. When overdosing calcium (taking more than about a 1000 mgs a day) you can cause kidney stones. Lots of kidney stones can also make your kidneys destroyed.
3.Creatine. This supplement also affects kidneys and can lead to slow degeneration as well as stones formation.
4. High dose of proteins. Proteins parts are eliminated with kidneys. Overdosing proteins leads to its elimination with urine and similarly to vitamin C can destroy kidneys.

In my opinion, you should definitely decrease the amount of all mentioned factors which can harm your kidney. If you want to check kidneys condition, creatine level in the blood should be checked.

Back pain can be caused by strained muscle as well as by kidney infection. To check it, please have urine analysis done.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
