Why Is EEG Done For Seizures?

default
Posted on Thu, 24 Apr 2014
Question: My son had a seizure on Monday and ended up in emergency room. He had a Catscan and EKG and all were normal. Today he went and had an EEG. The technician indiated that she would do flashing lights, breath, etc. tests -- but she had him fall asleep and that was it -- she said she was done. Do you know what this indicates? He is going to neurologist in 2 weeks

Brief Answer: Basics of EEG testing... Detailed Answer: Hi, I have gone through the medical history of your son and understood your concerns. I am sorry for the situation your son is in. I am also glad to know that cat-scan and EKG were normal. EEG (electroencephalogram) is the test that evaluates the electrical activity of XXXXXXX cells. Thus, understanding why your son had a seizure on Monday. During the test, the technician would ask to do some things: - lie still - close the eyes - breathe deeply/quickly - look at external stimuli: flashing light/picture In case of your son, the technician just had him fall asleep. If she did not ask your son to do such simple things, then, I suggest to discuss it further with his neurologist. You should tell him/her that your son did not gone through a complete process of EEG testing; so his EEG should be carefully analyzed. Hope it was of help! Let me know if you need further assistance!
