What Should Be The Daily Carbohydrate Count In A Diabetic Patient?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 Jun 2015
Question: I have diabetic neuropathy. What should my daily carb count be? I take 1000mg Metformin twice a day with meals. I haven't been as rigerous as I once was when I kept the carbs to 60 grams daily. I'm between 80 to 90 now and I know I need to bring it down. My Carbs come mostly from 16 ounces fresh fruit salad in the morning and raw walnuts much later. The rest of my calories come from red meat (I saw a summary of the Harvard mashed together study and was too scared to read much of it) and baked chicken with delicous skin. I'm just turning 50 and never felt so conscious of the rotting head on my shoulders. My A1C two months ago was 5.8%. I wanted to take a Glucose Plasma 12 hour fasting test; what came back was a Glucose Plasma NAFL. Is this the right test or no?

Brief Answer:
All good. Keep monitoring

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. 60 gm of carbohydrate is very strict. 75 gram carbs are advised in just a healthy breakfast for diabetics. Sticking to any thing less than 100 is alright. Your diet plan is very good. Just prefer natural products like this and avoid processed and canned products.

Your HBA1c is ideal as well. Any thing less than 6.5 means well controlled diabetes. Fasting glucose plasma test is good and recommended one at least once a week . So yes keep doing it. You can check your fasting levels by a glucometer on daily basis as well.

Remember, Eating a healthy, portion-controlled diet helps you manage your blood sugar levels and reduces your risk of diabetes-related conditions, such as heart disease and stroke. The best way to do this is to choose a variety of nutritious foods — those rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber — and limit foods that are high in cholesterol, saturated fat and sodium.

I hope it helps. Take good care of yourself and don't forget to close the discussion please.

Khan

I appreciate your time. Is the Glucose plasma NAFL the 12 hour fasting test I was looking for if so why the sodium flouride included in the result: Glucose Plasma NAFL= 72. with a dry fast that's low can I get hypoglycemic with just metformin?
I appreciate your patience.

Brief Answer:
Dose adjustment.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back to me!
Fasting levels of 72 is hypoglycemia and needs dose adjustment of metformin. i would suggest 850 mg twice a day. Na fluoride is to preserve the glucose accuracy by sparing its utilization by red blood cells in the sample which uses the process of glycolysis.

Stay in touch with your endocrinologist and let them decide what is best for you.
