What Is The Possibility Of Pregnancy When Having Delayed Periods?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Mar 2015
Question: Hi,
I had sex during December 19-22. Only twice I did not use a condom, but the "pull-out" method, if it can be called so. Then I had my period on January 2nd. However, the next period is missing until today, February 7th. I haven't had sex other than what I mentioned, but I got all confused since this period is really late. I have had no particular stress or hard exercise or anything else that could be a cause of a missed period

Brief Answer:
There is a possibility of pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Please write how long your cycle usually lasts. Also do you have regular or irregular cycles?

If you have a 28 day cycle ovulation is typically happening on the 14th day of your cycle.

You should start to be careful about 11th day of your cycle. So please check what day of your cycle was 19-22 December.

Please note that cycles can range from around 22 to 35 days.

Some women may have light bleeding or spotting very early in pregnancy but this is lighter than a typical period and lasts just a day or two.

There is also a possibility of pregnancy even that you use pull-out method. This is because small amounts of sperm can be present in the pre-ejaculate fluid.

I suggest you to do a pregnancy test so that it may let you know if you are pregnant or not.

Hope I have answered your question. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Thank you Doctor.

I already had a period after having sex. Does it not exclude the risk of a pregnancy?

I usually have irregular periods, but I do not remember the one before XXXXXXX 2nd.

How long can a period be late? Could it be as much as 6 weeks late?

Brief Answer:
the reason should be found.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

6 weeks are a little bit to long and this should be checked.

1. do the pregnancy test. It is possible that you could have light bleeding or spotting very early in pregnancy.

2. You may suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) which cause irregular cycles. This is a hormone imbalance and may cause missed periods.

I suggest you to do a pelvic ultrasound, which might show enlarged ovaries with small cysts which are the signs of PCOS. Also higher levels of androgens can cause your symptoms.

3. TSH to check for an overactive or underactive thyroid.

Thank you
