The respiratory tract is protected by mucus secreting glands to protect the lungs from particles like dust, pollen or smoke. The nose ( more so the nasopharynx) is lined by such glands. The throat mucus is supplied by both nasopharnx and the respiratory tract including the bronchi. Whitish and minimal quantity of mucus production is normal. Excess , thickened and discolored mucus indicates an infective cause.

Sneeze and cough alone will not do much for clearing up the mucus. If there is evidence of a lower respiratory tract infection or sinusitis then antibiotics should be initiated for optimum period and at adequate dose. Most of the time inadequate dosing and duration of therapy contribute to the failure of treating the infection. Decongestants, expectorants, anti histamines and mucolytics in combination with the antibiotics will lead to clearance of the mucus.

A physical exam along with investigations like CBC, ESR, Chest x ray to determine what the treatment priorities should be. Though in lower respiratory tract infections clarithromycin or a quinolone such as moxifloxacin can be a good empiric therapy. In sever infection combination therapy e.g ceftriaxone with azithromycin can be advised.

The mucus along with trapped particles is constantly being moved by the ciliated epithelium of the respiratory tract. Its due to the ciliary movements that mucus comes out the throat and the nasal cavity along with voluntary expectorant movements.

Mucus is also produced by goblet cells along the Gastrointestinal tract. The swallowed respiratory tract mucus can also add to the mucus in stool. Some amount of mucus in stool is also considered normal.
