What Is The Life Expectancy Of Stage 4 Colon Cancer Patient?

default
Posted on Fri, 31 Oct 2014
Question: Hi, my husband has been battling stage 4 colon adenocarcinoma with liver mets since November 2011. He had a colon resection (right side) and was given less than 5% chance to make it 5 years. 2 lymph nodes positive. He just stopped chemo in may of this year because nothing was working, CEA was climbing and CT scans didn't show any improvement. We saw a specialist in XXXXXXX and was given 3-4 months. He was hospitalized last week due to SOB and N/V, vomiting coffee ground emesis and blood. Found out he now has lung mets, nothing large enough to cause breathing problems. It's been a week, he's breathing better and seems to feel a lot better and doesn't seem to require a lot of pain meds. I know people usually get better before they get worse again. But how long can that last? And what do I expect in the weeks to come. Doctors say his liver is so enlarged that it's pressing on his diaphram causing SOB. Bilirubin present in his urine but no signs of jaundice yet. His eyes are dark and he looks tired. HR is 120-130s and BP is 140s/100. He's asked his adult children to come get their things out of the house and voiced to me how scared he is to be alone and how he's afraid to sleep, due to him not waking up. I know it's hard to say how much time is left but on average how long to people usually live without treatment? He just seems very anxious. He is 51 and was otherwise healthy before this

Brief Answer:
2 to 3 months more

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Welcome to HealthcareMagic .

Sorry to say this but the survival is about 2 to 3 months more. Because he has developed liver and lung metastases and also CEA is increasing.

In further weeks you may expect his breathing problem may increase and he start developing jaundice which will increase and body odema. He may need hospitalisation later.

He may symptomatically feel better inbetween and detoriate again.

Now the treatment includes moral support and pain and brethlessness relief. Also he may start taking tablets to get good sleep and reduce anxiety after consulting doctor. The effort is to may his last days as comfortable as possible with love and care.

When too much weight is reduced and metastasis is there changing chemotherapy may not be of benefit. It may still worsen his general health.

Hope I have answered your query . If any further queries are there I would love to help.
