What Is The Ideal Weight When BMI Is 19?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 Oct 2015
Question: Hello,

I have a heart condition and was advised several years ago by my GP that I needed to keep my cholesterol level low. I had put on some extra weight since the condition so followed a low fat health plan and lost two stone (I had weighed just over 10 stone). Several years forward I still follow the low fat, low sugar diet and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, and make sure I eat well.

I was weighed recently at the cardiology clinic and am 7 stone and 13 pounds. BMI estimated at 19; and 5 ft 4 " in height. I was told I am a little bit underweight and need to increase my fat intake. Please can you advise on my ideal weight?

Brief Answer:
117 to 125

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The normal BMI range is from 18.5 to 24.9 this means that your BMI is just within normal range

The average or the middle of this range would be approximately 21.5 though you do not necessarily have to reach this since yours is normal

At your height of 5 ft 4 inches, to reach a BMI of 21.5, your weight would have to be 125 pounds ( 8 stones approx 14 pounds). This would be a significant increase.

If you aim for a BMI of 20, then your weight would have to be 117 pounds (8 st, 4 pounds).

This means that you can aim to increase your weight up to 117 to 125 pounds. Any weight in this range would be fine.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Thank you Doctor for your detailed response. It has been very helpful. I thought my weight is just in the normal range and was wondering whether to increase it by half a stone or even a stone.

So I need to increase my fat intake (and still make sure I have enough nutrients). Once I've achieved my ideal weight within that range, I guess I can keep consuming more fat to keep it steady? I will just need to check my weight regularly.

My main concern was keeping my cholesterol low with the added fat intake.

Brief Answer:
yes, increase your intake

Detailed Answer:
HI

Yes, increase your fat intake and when you achieve the weight you wish then maintain that diet at that level of fat intake.

You can check you weight once or twice weekly to see where it is.

A slight increase in fat should not cause a major difference in your cholesterol level but you can have them reassessed in a few months to make sure

If anything else unclear feel free to let me know
