What Is The Dosage Of Vitamin D For Vit D Deficiency?

default
Posted on Mon, 8 Sep 2014
Question: I have a Vitamin D deficiency (Normal 30-80; I'm at 10). My doctor put me on a regimen of 10,000 IU once a week for 5 weeks and 800 IU a day thereafter. Is this reasonable as I've read articles that suggest the initial dosage should be more than 10,000 IU per week.

Brief Answer:
60000 IU

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
I am Dr Mittal
I will try to answer your query,
I will try to explain to you the thought behind it.

There are 3 possible regimes to correct Vitamin D
1. Take high dose Vitamin D weekly. Follow this with monthly high doses.
2. Take high dose Vitamin D weekly. Follow this with daily low doses.
3. Take daily low doses. Intersperse with occasional high doses.

Every regime has advantages and disadvantages.
I personally prefer the 1st technique. It reduces the doses to be taken and doesn't give the patient the feeling of taking daily medicines. Risk, once a month doses are soon forgotten.

The second regime maintains the doses, and yet the continuous therapy makes sure that there is no missing the dose. Problem- one takes a daily tablet for a long long time.

The third is a good regime, but very slow improvement. However it is the safest regime.

And yes, I usually start with a dose of 60000IU.
I would suggest you discuss with the doctor why he has initiated 10000IU.
There may be a factor he knows that I dont know about.

Best of luck
