default
Posted on Mon, 19 May 2014
Question: I m 14 weeks and 4 days pregnant..I was pregnant with twins and one of the twins stopped growing at 9 weeks..
I had my level 1 scan and my nt scan is perfect.
But I did not have any blood test like dauble marker or triple marker as my doctor told me it us not accurate with twins..
She told me to go for NIPT scan at 16 weeks with anomaly scan..
Can I have dauble marker now of is it too late?
Also what is the difference between dauble marker and NIPT test? And which one is more accurate ?

Also I have sinus and my divot told me to have relent tablet with otrivin? Are they safe ?

Brief Answer:
NIPT scan is better.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
NIPT is a maternal blood test that can be performed from 10 weeks gestation. Currently, it is the most accurate screening test for Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18) and Patau syndrome (Trisomy 13). It is a blood test that is better than double marker.
Double marker test tests only for Down's syndrome. It can be taken at 14 weeks.
Relent tablet is safe for use in pregnancy. You can use it with Otrivin for symptomatic relief.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Can NIPT test be performed in case of twins ?
I mean what if one has some problem n other is ok as I miscarried one of my twins ?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Rakhi Tayal (4 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Yes. Can be done in twin pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Yes the test can be done for twin pregnancy also. It will detect the possibility of any chromosomal anomalies in both the babies. Since you have already miscarried your one baby the test will depict the results regarding the healthy baby.
Hope my answer is helpful.

One last question

Someone told me that the test can be performed only after six weeks of miscarriage of one of the twins.
As the fetal DNA will not be left if ibe if the twins
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Rakhi Tayal (27 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
This is not true.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
DNA from the fetus circulates in the mother’s blood. Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) results from the natural breakdown of fetal cells (presumed to be mostly placental) and clears from the maternal system within hours of giving birth or abortion. This free DNA is tested in this test to predict any genetic abnormality. So you can get the test done 4-5 weeks after a miscarriage as in your case.

Also since I m having a lot of cough ,sneezing hope that won't effect my pregnancy ?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Dr. Rakhi Tayal (11 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Can cause pain abdomen.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Lots of cough and sneezing can increase the intra abdominal tension and can cause preterm pains.
In this changing season the cause is most likely viral so treatment with antibiotics is not needed but you should do saline gargles. To make a good warm saline preparation you should add 5 grams table salt to 250 ml of water and make it XXXXXXX warm.
Then do gargles after every meal or after you eat anything during day time.
Cover yourself with sufficient warm clothes all the time and avoid open cold air exposure as this could aggravate the problem.
You can also take low doses of decongestant medicines like half tablet of Sinarest as required for congestion.
Keep well hydrated with plenty of warm fluids and especially fruit juices.
For running nose you may apply 2 drops of saline nasal drops to each nostril twice a day for relief.
Eat plenty of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables. Eat high protein diet like cereals, pulses, chicken, lean meat, eggs.
In case there is sputum production with cough, considerable pain in the throat, high grade fever or the symptoms persist for more than 4-5 days then do consult your physician for a local physical examination of your throat to rule out any bacterial infection. Antibiotic treatment may be needed in such a case.
Regards.

Brief Answer:
Not likely to cause miscarriage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Excessive sneezing and coughing can cause pain in the abdomen due to stress. This can cause mild placental abruption or detachment or mild bleeding. It will not cause miscarriage but can cause mild bleeding and proper treatment needs to be taken to prevent this situation.
