What Is The Difference Between Synflorix And Prevnar?

Posted on Wed, 12 Nov 2014
Question: Hi, I am a mother of 5 month old baby girl. I started her on Pneumococcal vaccine. The first dose given to her was Prevnar 13 on her 3 months. The second dose was administered at 4 months. However, recently I realized after seeing her file that the doctor gave Synflorix instead of Prevnar for her second dose. He didn't even tell us before doing this. When I asked him, he mentioned in XXXXXXX streptococcus strain of pneumonia is more prevalent and thus, Prevnar and Synflorix are to be given alternatively.
I am not sure about what is this. I will go for her next dose this week.
My questions:

1. Are the two medicines very different?
2. Will it harm my baby that her second dose was Synflorix and not Prevnar?
3. What can I do to make this better?
4. Also, I am agitated at my doctor for not informing me that he is giving some other medicine. Can I take any action against him?

Please help. I am very worried about my daughter.

Brief Answer:
no need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.
I can understand your concern.
Tha main difference is cost and,
Prevenar 13 give protection against 13 types and synflorix give protectuon against 10 types of bacteria.

You should complete all the 3 doses with same brand which you have given previously.

But you need not worry , change of brand will not harm your baby.
Yes there are chances that immunity will be partial against those extra strains which are present in prevenar13.
Yes you should be informed about change of vaccine by the doctor.

I think you should not take any action against him, which will be unnecessary waste of time and money.

Better way you ask him to complete remaining schedule with prevenar 13 only.
It will cover up your losses.

Hope i helped you.

Thank you for your reply.

I have one more question, not related to the topic.

With Diwali approaching, there is too much noise around. Is there anything I can do to protect my baby's ears? Are there anything available in the market?

Brief Answer:
baby ear muff

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the query.
Sound above certain frequencies may be dangerous.
Sound in which we can not listen or talk in normal voice ( we have to shout) may be dangerous.
Yes you can use baby ear muff or cotton ball which is tightly rolled ( so that cotton does not stick inside).

Keep all doors closed.
And last thing you can avoid firing crackers with loud sound.
Instead use one with low noise.

Hope i helped.
