What Is The Cause And Treatment For Dry Eyes?

default
Posted on Sat, 7 Jun 2014
Question: Hi, I am an IT Professional since last 7 years and I have daily sitting of 10hours in front of LED. My eye sight is perfect but I have pain in my eyes since last few years, it occurs once in a week or two week. The pain increases after spending much time in sun light (eg; driving car without sunglasses) and starting a high brightness/contrast screen. After an hours of pain my eyes produce uncontrolled tears which are unbearable. I used to take long sleep to fix pain but I want a permanent solution for this before its being more frequent with ageing, please suggest me the same.

Hello
Welcome to Health care Magic
I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

The symptoms which you have mentioned in the question indicate dry eyes probably induced by viewing computer/laptop screen and it is called as computer vision syndrome.

The treatment is by use of artificial tears eye drops 3-4 times a day depending on the severity of the condition.
This can be prevented by taking precautions like
Avoiding continuous use of computer by taking at least a break of 3-5 minutes after working for one continuous hour.
Avoiding the use of fan directed towards the eye and minimizing the use of air conditioner as par as possible which increase dryness of eye
Adjusting the height of the monitor of the computer/laptop slightly below the level of the eyes to prevent the light from the monitor reaching the eyes.
use of antiglare coated glasses to minimize the exposure of the eyes to the light from the monitor.
Washing the eyes with normal water at least twice a day.
Use of sunglasses when go out to avoid dryness and dust from reaching the eyes.

With the above mentioned precautions computer vision syndrome can be prevented and use of artificial tears will help to get relief from acute symptoms.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.
