Brief Answer:
Hernia is an abnormal lump....

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

In short and simple term hernia is an abnormal lump. By definition it refers to abnormal protrusion of content through an abnormal opening in the wall that previously contained the hernial contents. I understand that's something confusion.

The cause is due to lax wall. The laxity can develop due to iatrogenic (surgery), chronic condition like constipation / cough or exercise or other unknown cause. Lax wall and the pressure within it pushes the content to herniate through it and forming hernia.

I hope you got the information you were looking for. Let me know if you need clarifications.

Brief Answer:
Complications may follow if untreated...

Detailed Answer:
Well surgery is the only way to rectify the hernia. But some surgeons choose to treat it conservatively before putting them under the knife. The patient needs to discuss about postponing surgery against the risks of complications associated. If the surgeon feels hernia opening (mouth) is not very narrow to obstruct, he/she can choose to treat it conservatively.

As far as medication is concerned, it can take care of symptoms. But it doesn't rectify it.

Brief Answer:
Obstruction and strangulation....

Detailed Answer:
If the opening of the hernia sac is narrow, there is possibility of the contents getting obstructed. Obstructed hernia is extremely painful. And when the obstruction continues, there is possibility that blood supply gets cut off leading to gangrenous changes. We call this type of hernia where blood supply is cut off as strangulated hernia. Strangulated hernia when not treated early can lead to both morbidity and mortality.
