If a peptic ulcer requires sugery, what do they do? (I am asking on behalf of my husband who is in hospital in Egypt)

If a peptic ulcer requires surgery, the part of the stomach (with the ulcer) is removed. The rest of the stomach is connected with duodenum, sometimes with other part of small intestine. With this surgery it is also necessary to cut vagus nerve branches on both sides of the esophagus. The nerve is cut because it is through which stimulation of acid secretion occurs.

An incision is done on the upper part of the abdomen. After such surgery, the part of stomach which is left can function like a normal stomach. It just takes some time for this part to extend enough to eat as before the surgery.

Nowadays, partial stomach removal because of the peptic ulcer is rare. It’s because we have great medicines (proton pump inhibitors) and ulcers can be successfully treated with this medicines. Also Helicobacter Pylori eradication (it’s a bacteria which causes ulcers) allows for permanent ulcers cure.
