What Does This Skin Biopsy Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Sep 2015
Question: I had undergone skin biopsy and have a report which states that "Histolgic features raise the possibility of Lupus Erythematous".

Microscopic findings states - Epidermis shows focal thinning and foci of basal layer vacuolization. Focal keratinocyte is seen, which is most likely reactive. Focal scarring is seen in the upper dermis. Superficial and mid perivascular and perifollicular lymphocytic infiltrate is seen, Pigment incontinence is present.

Can you pelase help me understand the meaning of this report. It states i have lupus but what does other microscopic findings mean. Asides doctor was suspecting Sarcodosis, so does lupus and sarcodosis mean the same?

?Lupus

Good evening

Thank you for writing on health care magic

Well, from the biopsy report it does seem like Lupus considering the skin rash you are having and the characterstic histological features.

For the difference between the 2 diseases it is very important to know the history along with the other serological profile like ANA, ENA profile and the remaining blood counts. SLE and Sarcoid are 2 wide apart diseases with a different pathogenesis.

I would like to know your clinical history and if the other tests like ANA, ENA have been performed.

DO let me know before I can guide you further
