What Does This Pap Smear Test Report Indicate?

Question: Hi doctor, my pap smear report says - scanty cellular material show few superficial squamous cells. No endocervical or metaplastic cells seen. Correlate clinically. What does it mean? I am very worried? Any treatment to cure this?

Hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
This is a completely normal pap smear report with only few squamous cells which is normal. Absence of metaplastic cells indicates that there is no cervical atypical or cancer cells.
Absence of endocervical cells also indicate that this is probably an inadequate smear sample.So there is no need to be worried.

Thank you so much for your reply.I am a bit relaxed now to know that the report is normal. Is presence of superficial squamous cells normal?

I am a layman so I went through the internet sites to know about the above report. Most of the sites say presence of superficial squamous cells causes skin cancer. That is why I was very worried.

Shall I have to go for any further tests?

yes few squamous cells are normal.

Hello,
Few superficial squamous cells are often seen in the smear and thats normal as long as there is no metaplasia or anaplasia. So you need not be worried. Considering the smear was inadequate, you can go ahead for a repeat pap smear after 6 months, not before that.
