What Does This MRI Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Jul 2015
Question: My girl friend did MRI scan and the summary is this. MRI appearance advocates:
- Arachnoid cyst left temporal pole above;
- Arachnoid cyst left posterior temporal lobe;
- Schizencephaly closed right side;
- Agenesis of the septum pellucidum.

What does this mean and what can she do?
What type of treatment can be prescribed? or operation to correct the diagnosis? She sometimes passes out in form of crisis which last for a few seconds.

Please help.

Brief Answer:
Seizures should be considered.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

Usually arachnoid cysts are not cause of concerns, only few cases where is evidence about growing or causing neurologic symptoms are treated by surgery.

In my opinion, first there's is need for a correct evaluation of what you call passing out, it may be a seizure.

Evaluation consists on consulting a Neurologist and having EEG (electroencephalogram) done.

If the Neurologist after clinical examination and EEG results concludes that there are seizures related to arachnoid cysts then surgical treatment needed together with antiseizure therapy (drugs).

If no such relation, arachnoid cysts and schizencephaly don't need surgical treatment.

Absence of septum pellucidum is found in coexistence with other brain and skull malformations, in this case with schizencephaly and doesn't need necessarily treatment.

Hope this helps. If you have further questions, feel free to ask, if not, you can close the conversation and rate the answer.

Best regards.
