Question: We have got a routine health check done for my mother aged 63. Attached is one of the pages related to diabetes. As you see numbers are out of normal range. However, she said that she has no problem with healing of wounds so it can not be diabetes. Could you please advise.

Brief Answer:
HBA1C explained

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal. I have read your query. I think I would be able to help you. I have read your reports.

The test you have done is HBA1C, which is an average test for sugars for the past 3 months. The other value I'd a retrograde calculation from this value.
And as you pointed out correctly, your report days clearly the sugars are not controlled.

The point is that this one report cannot tell us where you are going wrong in treatment. The report shows that she has average sugar that is high. Her fasting sugar may be normal and she might be developing high sugars later like after food. Similarly, her diet may be having some food that is glucogenic- in other words that causes the sugars to rise fast and high even if they do not give sufficient calories to cause high sugars throughout the day, like cornflakes.

So overall ,you need to start her sugar monitoring by the glucometer again .maintain her chart and accordingly we will know where we need to add therapy.

I hope that she is still taking her medicines well , has a regular diabetic diet and exercise regularly.

I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information helps you. Please feel free to contact us for more information. Best of luck. Dr Mittal.
